Flaming Lips, 12/30/06, Bill Graham Civic, San Francisco

I have seen the Lips 3 times and every show is unique and great in its own way.

The show started for us with great seats in the 3rd row upper-deck to the left side of the stage. We missed the very first band and caught Cat Power just as they started. It was a good set reminding me of Eddy Brochell.

Next up was a great show by Knarls Barkely. One of the best moments of the evening was a surprising cover of Bowie’s “Major Tom”; they need to release this cover. If you get a chance, catch Knarles Barkeley!

Next up was the Lips. In true Lips fashion, they were out there setting up there own gear prior to the show. While I think this detracts a bit from their Grand entrance, I’m happy they don’t take themselves or this whole “Rock Star” thing too seriously. The opening was GRAND, their space ship was very kool and Wayne descended in a plastic ball that he then walked and crawled over the audience. The Lips were fantastic! While the pace of the show was a little off (seemed they were messing with the set list on stage), the experience was incredible! This was New Years Eve for every one in attendance. As Wayne said, “time is what we make it” or something like that…

The sound was great, the band was great, the visuals were off the hook and the feeling was beyond explanation.

I was worried they'd gotten to big to put out that incredibly positive vibe, I was wrong. It appears the crowd feeds them and they feed the crowd til the positive energy strikes even natural born introverts like me. I was talking with strangers and wishing them a Happy New Year!
