The Turnip comes home - Update #3

I just picked up the Turnip from Leales RV in San Jose.
I dropped her off on Friday May 19th for the $79 oil change and 22 point inspection. Let me say this: Leales RAWKS!

I got a laundry list of suggestions for tackling my hot running 440 motor. I got an estimate of nearly $2500 to fix EVERYTHING including a new radiator, tune-up, belts and hoses, etc. They broke the list up into must do, advisable, and elective categories.

[More:]

My list is as follows:
Radiator, thermostat, radiator hoses, heater hoses, fan clutch, fan drive belt, tune-up, transmission coolant lines, transmission service.

I am taking the list of stuff and doing the work myself. At $140/hour I can save a bundle. Just removing and replacing the radiator is over $400 in labor. Parts for a tune-up are $160 and labor is $345.

I paid for the oil change and drove the Turnip home.

First on the list is the radiator. I am going to pull it this weekend and bring it to my mechanic. He said he would give it to his radiator guy for a core job. I'll be paying his cost. If it cannot be repaired I may have to pay $815 for a custom made replacement. This radiator is original and no longer produced. While the radiator is off I'll replace all the belts, hoses and thermostat. I'll install a high flow aluminum water pump ($120) and fan clutch ($140)

I'll also do plugs, points, cap, rotor and K&N air filter.
The transmission coolant lines are leaking so they need replacing. A transmission service is last on the list.

They also said that I should have the balance of my tires checked before I do anything else to fix my high speed "shimmy". If they are well balanced then I should replace the shocks. I have a feeling it is the shocks though. They are original and leaking. This is also a job I can do myself as the shocks are very accessible.

Leales did not disconnect my house battery so it is dead. I must have a short somewhere. My 12V stuff does not work on the house battery alone. When I am plugged into shore power all 12V works. This is my only mystery left to figure out.

Lot's of work to do and not a lot of time to do it. Hoping I can get this stuff done in time for the 4th of July shake down trip to the playa.
