The BRAVE project begins

I picked up the Brave in Aromas and drove her to the Stalag with no major issues. Some things to fix:

1. Fuel gauge not working
2. Refer stopped working after the drive.
3. Needs new fan belts and hoses.
4. Brakes need love.
5. Black water tank is cracked.

14 years of sitting has rotted all of the rubber parts (belts hoses)

I was driving her to Leales for brakes, belts and hoses when 2 fan belts gave way and suddenly had no brakes, no water pump, etc.
A call to AAA and I learned that AAA only offers towing for 24 ft and shorter rigs so I was going to have to pay for the tow myself.

[More:]

Since the brakes and belts are not "RV" specific, I decided to go ahead and have the towing company shop do the work. Their shop rate is 25 bucks an hour cheaper. When they wanted to charge me for the tow after an obvious bait and switch saying that they would tow for free if they did the work, I decided to just have them do the brakes and belts. I will change hoses and fuel line myself.

Picked her up and the brakes are excellent. New disks, drums, master cylinder, etc. Stops like a dream and no more pedal to the floorboard action.

The rear tires are dry rotted so I need to replace them before any distance driving. They are 8-17.5 size and not cheap. $199 each is the cheapest I've been able to find. There is supposedly a $135 tire available in that size but I have had no luck in that respect. I'd like to get all 6 tires replaced at once but the fronts are still good and have some life left.

I haven't looked at the fuel sender yet but I've fixed that on several trucks in my life and it's pretty straight forward.

I picked up a PVC welder at Harbor Freight and will give the black water tank repair a go. If I can't repair it I'll have to replace it anyway.

The refrigerator is the last thing I'll tackle after all else is fixed. I plan on getting a new 10 cubic foot model.

This rig is clean and solid and drives like a dream. My goal is to get everything sorted by May so she can make the trip to Roach Lake and Dark Skies 2007!

Jo and I camped at Pismo Beach this weekend in the Komfort trailer. Oceano Dunes is a great campground and we should plan a group outing there in the summer!

More progress reports on the Brave as I get to it.

skid out!

Right on skid. That towing/fixing mess sounds like it turned out OK with the brakes and all. "Go" is no good without "stop" :-)

With this weather - Pismo in the summer sounds kick ass!!'
